How Ask The Experts Works...

-------------------------------------------
How Ask The Experts Works...

We have several well known experts, volunteering their time to help our members by fielding and answering questions that we pose to them and when they have time and can get to the questions they will respond.

Note** If your question is an emergency please seek a veterinarian.

Some questions we will answer for you regarding the ask the experts area....

Q: Where do we draw these questions from?

A: We grab them from various areas on the board from the specific species forums, bird talk forum, recipes, and "Ask A Question Sub Forum" within Ask The Experts and etc..

Q: Why isn’t there an expert area for all the bird species?

A: As of right now we currently have areas set up for "Macaws, Cockatoos, Electus, Amazons, Parrotlets, and African Greys and as more specie experts come on board we will add those areas they have expertise in.

Q: Are members allowed to post and reply to the experts posts?

A: Ask The Experts is a limited area where the Experts are the only people who are able to post. This helps us and them make best use of their time and information without getting sidetracked and answering
common questions that come up often. Those topics that are very common and come up all the time will available in an archive area on the site that anyone can easily access.

Q: Why was my post not answered and or moved to other areas of BirdBoard.com

A: Bird Board members have alot of experience as well and you are free to ask questions at will in the other areas of the site. so if we feel your question can be answered by our experienced group of members we will move it to the bird tallk forum, and or other areas to make sure you get replys and information that will help you...

Remember:

"Bird Talk Forum" is setup for people to talk about anything related to birds, questions, comments, how to's, etc

"Specific Bird Forums" is there if you would like to pose questions and meet more members that have the same species of birds as you do, the specific bird forums are there for that reason.

A condition? Has this bird been seen by an avian vet? Have you had the macaw for it's entire life or did you get the bird from someone else? I do not recommend giving birds anything unless recommended by an avian vet.

There's more than one pronouncation, there's two in the link below...
Psittacosis definition | Dictionary.com

sit-uh-koh-sis would probably be closest, however there are some who probably pronounce it as zee-tuh-koh-sis or sigh-tuh-koh-sis.

For simplicity, I like using the pronounciation of "Chlamydia" instead...
Psittacosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kinda like the word "caique" which has been pronounced as "cake" or "quake" or even "cay-eek" but is "kye-eek." Or the word "eclectus." It is "eh-klec-tus" or "ee-klec-tus" but the first "C" may be skipped so it can end up being "eh-lec-tus" or "ee-lec-lus" instead.

Varies from where ya come from and what you've learned....

Question rare "Hispanolan" parrot

Hi ... we have a 26 year old female Hispanolan (sp?) parrot ... She is from the Dominican Republic. I cannot find any information about her species. I know she is related to amazon's ... but there are so many different kinds. I'm hoping someone here as heard of her kind and/or has had some experience with them ...

We are considering getting a companion bird for her and I think the more I know about her "kind" the better luck we'll have with finding a forever friend for her ...

Thanks!! ~Karen

Cuca is a Hispaniolan Amazon (Amazona ventralis), she's not related to amazons because she *IS* one! She looks gorgeous although her front feathers look barbered and plucked, soem feathers in rough shape, and toenails messed up.

What is her current diet and has she been to a recent avian vet for a CBC???

As for getting her a friend, well there's no guarantee she'll accept one, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to find another of her species, since they are uncommon. That is, at least one that is pet quality.

Hi Monica! Thanks for letting me know that she IS an Amazon!! ;-)

Cuca does pluck her own chest feathers and her left shoulder/wing area. She is actually looking better than she did.

As for her toe nails: she broke her right leg about 3 years ago and it didn't seem to heal correctly and is fused at the "knee" joint. She lost one of her toe's and another is twisted to the side. We keep her nails longer so that she is better able to grip on her perches etc.

Her diet is quite varied with mixed enriched seeds, as well as fresh fruits and veggies. I also give her hard boiled egg and enriched cereals. She loves nuts and we give her almonds from the tree in our yard.

Cuca is currently recovering from some kind of illness (we almost lost her! a week ago) and is on antibiotics 2 x/day - plus she was given several antibiotic shots. Our vet is not an Avian specialist, but she has lots of bird experience. I would like to take Cuca to an Avian vet though, for a complete check-up with blood panels as soon as she's strong enough ... to make sure we aren't missing anything related to the illness. She was so ill, that the emergency vet we took her to (who was an Exotic's Vet) could not draw any blood from her fearing it would have killed her - due to her sever dehydration and lethargy. We're just so thankful that she was able to nurse her through the night with fluid injections and the antibiotics. My husband said that Cuca has never been ill like that in her life!

Anyway, any suggestions you could offer would be ever so appreciated! and thanks again!!

Cuca, Karen and Ross
