What is this???

Would someone please tell me where and how I can post a picture of a bird I caught on film a few days ago? My neighbor, sister and ex-husband are trying to convince me it's an American Bald Eagle. I'd really like to get some other opinions! I live on the ocean in Southern California and am having a hard time believing that an eagle would hang out at the beach!

Thank you!

justme
(Stacy)

p.s. If it is an eagle, should I contact whoever tagged him/her? (he has a red tag on each of his wings.) How would I go about finding out that information?

Thank you!

Okay, I posted it.

Fenton, Missori? I'm from Farmington (70 miles SE of St. Louis)!

So, is it an American Bald Eagle? Should I contact anyone? The person that tagged it? Do you know how I would find that out? Are they very rare? And finally, what the heck would he be doing hanging out at the beach in Southern California? I took this picture from my balcony last week! I live on the ocean and thought it was just a really odd looking seagull!

Oh my! It is?????

Should I be excited? Oh, by the way, sorry about the misspelling of "Missouri"! Jeeze! You'd think a native would know how to spell it! I guess I was in a hurry . . . . :-)

You probably saw one of these http://www.iws.org/
They are nested on Catalina island and have those red tags you saw, their range is well within the region that you saw this one in.
Congratulations!!!! Not many folks look up and even less see the King of the skies.

Farmington....!!! just around the corner.....glad to see you got outta here and went to the beach...what a dream!!! ok....i have to get goin to the birdshow and then continue moving......(staying in fenton) but i did find this on the net................

"The ONLY place to find out about marked birds, unless one already knows the
researcher(s) involved, is the Bird Banding Lab: National Biological Survey,
Inventory & Monitoring, 12100 Beech Forest Road, Bird Banding Lab, Laurel, MD
20708-4037. (301) 497- 5804. That phone number will put you in touch with
the auxiliary marking section, the people who are responsible for authorizing
and coordinating markers such as color bands, radio-telemetry on wild birds,
and patagials."

big-ups to a fellow Missourian!

That's cool that you got a photo of the eagle :)

My fiance and I went to Alki Beach (West Seattle) here, and saw a bald eagle sitting atop a wooden post, about 50 feet from the shore. I wish I had my camera! She was gorgeous, and just sat there, letting people take pictures of her while she enjoyed the afternoon sun. When she did finally fly off, it was breathtaking. I never realized how large they are until I was that close to one!

The pesticide that hasn't been used in 30 years is still affecting the environment here in Southern Callifornia. That is disturbing to say the least. I wonder if it will ever dissapate enough for the bald eagles to flourish once again?

Thanks for the link Cliff.
