Bird Health Insurance

Hi,

Having just got hit with a $900 vet bill for my little budgie, I'm considering getting pet insurance for my flock. Anyone know a company that has a policy that covers birds?

Thanks!

Hello Samiam1022...........What was wrong with the little budgie??? You might consider using a different vet first.......I heard that pet insurance isn't what it is cracked up to be but I don't remember the exact reasons why. I do remember that I decided against it for whatever reasons, back whenever .............I think you should just make sure you buy any future birds from reputable breeders who practice good animal husbandry and make sure you quarantine all new arrivals. Provide excellent diet and proper lighting/sunshine, exercise, large flight, toys, playmates etc..... and you probably will never need a vet again.....Oh yeah, a birdy medicine chest is helpful as are ALL THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS POSSIBLE for your pet birds while they are outside & even while inside, in their cages..........For any emergencies like accidental broken bones etc. I would have a reliable, fair Avian Vet lined up and ready to go when needed. One who will not fleece your pockets.......Maybe someone else can give you a more direct answer to your exact question, sorry I could not exactly help on that.......Good luck.

P.S: If you do get the pet insurance for your flock, will you please fill us in regarding the specifics.......Thanks. :)

As far as insurance, the one I saw said it only covered the yearly checkup, and maybe 20% of "other services. I also remember that the payments on it were extremely high.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

My budgie Oscar (a rescue from the Mass SPCA) has an upper respiratory infection. They are keeping him overnight, tests, the whole nine yards. The $$ is high because the hospital is one of the best in the country...Angell Memorial. I guess you get what you pay for, but I'm not complaining because they have always taken great care of all of my birds.

Special thanks to Lisa for the link... :) . Very helpful article and it looks like VPI might be a good choice.

Wow, I guess I'm lucky over here in England. I have insurance for Humphrey that costs about 5 dollars a month, and covers up to about 5000 in emergency vet bills. I hope there is something like this available in the USA

Michele and Humph
