Clipping toe nails of older bird

Hi,

One of my older budgies (i.e., is 14 or 15) has extra long toe-nails this summer. He is not tame, and is housed in a big flight cage. Should I take
him and have his toe-nails clipped? He is a very lean budgie, flies and exercises all the time. He is timid. Any advice?

Thanks!

Ramona

I would suggest that you get his nails clipped and letting them grow out too long can cause serious problems...

If you're not experienced in clipping nails, I'd take him to an avian vet who can do it for you. There is always a chance of clipping that tiny vein in the nail which can bleed quite a bit.

When I clip nails, I make sure to have either flour or these swab thingies around to stop the bleeding if necessary. The swabs I got at a pet store, and they work pretty well. They were on the spendy side, but well worth it. :)

nails

Hi,

Thanks, I took Joe's (older budgie's) girlfriend to the vet for a nail clipping and the avian vet did a good job. I will take Joe for a nail-clipping this week. His nails are not excessively long, but a little longer than usual! ramona
