Unhappy I don't get my Sun

I know he's new to us.... but he gives such mixed signals!!

2 nights ago he was playful with us on the couch... hiding under a blanket, preening our fingers and head butting our fingers ( which I was told is him asking for food from us)... then he would cuddle up to our face and just kiss and kiss and kiss....he was running all over us, playing in the folds of a blanket... he was out for about 3 hours!

Then last night he didn't want to come out at all... we would ask and he would squeek and bite and then if we got him out all he would do is try to fly back....he was maybe out of his cage for 15 mins the whole day yesterday.

He did do the head butt thing with me for a minute and I tried to hand feed him some oatmeal but he wouldn't try it....

Lately I've noticed when we walk up to the cage he goes as far back as he can and tries to make himself small.... he'll let me pet him but won't come out.....

I feel bad... is there anything else I can do besides give him treats and just talk to him? We leave the cage door open when we're home....

Remember when I warned you birds were like children... not dogs?

I know he'll have his days... but you would think that after being home alone all day with just his cage he would want to come out...... it makes me feel so bad for him!!

But I guess all I can do is stand at the cage a talk to him and give him treats....

Some people were telling me just to take him out and others saying just wait until he comes out.... I get the feeling he will never just come out on his own!! lol

He seems like a bit of a sleepy bird he just kind of sits in one place all the time....

We're going to try to re-vamp his cage this weekend and give him some new perches and new toys.... see if it'll liven him up a bit!!

Yep, they will just have their good and bad days. There are some days my conure screams all day (thankfully it isn't too frequent), and then he will be fine the next. They just get off.

I am of the opinion that you shouldn't ever force yourself upon him, I think it will make him trust you less. And this is the crucial time when you need him to come around and start to trust you. He might also be sleepy because he is a bit overwhelmed with his changes, and he might not be sleeping all that well (birds need about 12 hours of sleep every night). Lack of sleep will certainly make a cranky bird!

I think when you approach the cage, see if he wants to come out. If not, then close the door and leave him be for awhile. Then later you can ask him again, but try not to keep asking and "begging" him to come out or you might find you have to do that every time. You can even warm him up to coming out of the cage first by sitting next to it and reading a book or just talking to him, giving treats, etc.

That's kid of how I feel too.... I don't want to make him come out if he doesn't want to... it's just so hard to see him just sit in there all day :(

Poor little guy.... well tonight when I get home I'll go talk to him and just pet him...

That's common for Suns and most birds. They have sleepy days or they want to be alone, then they come back for more fun the next day, and so on. Since he's so new to you, he may be very tired right now because he's finally relaxing and all the stress is lessening. That means his adrenalin is fading and he's needing down time. Rest assured, Conures are crazy curious and social and he'll eventually get into his normative pattern in your household.

Good idea! How much beer do you give them exactly... to get them to pass out in a drunken stupor?

ha ha ha Thats funny!!

They are characters that's for sure!

Funny story... we took out the vaccum for the 1st time.... I thought he was sleeping and the SECOND it came around the corner 9it wasn't even on yet)

he sure let us know that he did NOT like it!! lol

It was so funny! So we backed it up enough to the point he couldn't see it anymore........... nothing but silence........ lol

He didn't even make a noise when it was on... he just didn't like seeing that thing!
