Housing Jenday & Sun Please advise me!
I recently got a Sun Conure... he's a great bird but never been housed with another bird before but has been AROUND other birds.....
I came across a VERY poorly taken care of Jenday and I have the chance to take him home to give him a better life... What are the chances that these 2 birds will get along living in the same cage right away?? The Jenday has also never been housed with another bird before but is roomed right next to a green cheek..... I'm not sure yet if I will have 2 males or 2 females but will know soon.... Thank you for your help in advance! I really want to give this Jenday a better home! |

you should always plan that the birds wont get along and have another cage ready
then if they do (after the new bird acclimates to his new home) you have a nice bonus of them living together i lucked out when i got wasabi and he got along with boogie but i had another cage all set up for him to use until i bought him a permanent cage just in case so basically - you cant say that two species will get along it is 100% dependent on the individual birds' personalities |

First off, let me congratulate you for being willing to open your heart and home to another avian in need! There are so many homeless/neglected birds today.
It is never really a good idea to just put two birds together from the start, as the new bird could be carrying a disease. It's best to quarentine the new avian member of your flock for around 30 days (some people quarentine for over 6 months). Try to keep a closed door between them, and wash your hands between each bird. This makes the odds lower of one--of both--of them getting sick. If after introduced, they get along fine (sitting by each other, eating together, maybe even preening) they might be able to be housed together, but don't count on it. Besides, the only cages that could comfortable house 2 large conures are bound to be very expensive, so you would most likely be saving money by purchasing them each their own cage.

Thank you so much for giving some advice.
My fiancee and I are holding off to get the other bird for right now... we don't know the sex of either bird yet but are waiting on the results of our bird.... Jeremy is still a little nervous and not sure of things so I don't want to change things up yet while he's just starting to get used to things... Maybe in a week or two we can rescue that other bird... |
