Parakeet breeding with Cockatiel

I caught my male budgie mating with my female cockatiel today. Why did he do that and can they actually make babies? I have had and bred birds for many years and have never seen or heard of that happening before. I'm freaked out!!!

It's not unusual for birds to act out with each other - especially when they have a bond. However, you won't get babies from that union. If one is a hen, you might get clear eggs.

Skyrat is quite right here. I've herad of budgies and cockatiels mating before, as well as other species which were not close enough to produce offspring. The female birds of the pair usually laid clear eggs that never hatched.

The only parrots that I have heard that can hybridize are macaws with other macaws (or mini macaws with larger conures), cockatoos with other toos, conures with other conures, n grass keets with other grass keets. I'm just saying that there are no records of budgies, or even cockatiel being able to reproduce chicks with other species of parrots.
