Yes, a real tree is fine to have around birds. You just want to do the basic safety stuff. Make sure your birdies cant' get to wires on the lights to chew on. Also make sure they stay away from the ornaments or tinsel that could break. If they walk around, make sure they can't get into the water in the base.
What I started doing last year was bringing Tigger my DYH into the livingroom to watch us put up the tree. This let him watch it come up and be decorated. He was not as scared as the first year when he came in the room, and a huge tree had sprung up without notice
