Harrison's users-Storing Harrison's?

I was using Harrison's but it seemed to go bad to quickly I did what it said to do on the bag keep it sealed in the original bag. But it was only lasting for about 2 weeks! And that's way to much money to blow for me. I was wondering if I should keep it sealed but just but it in the fridge or freezer and maybe it would last longer. I've been using zupreem which is good but I'm wondering if I should try Harrison's again or should I try just to go to zupreem natural. Right now the birds eat the fruitblend. But it seemed like with Harrison's my tiel was more active? Does anyone know how that could be? Is Harrison's really any better than zupreem putting the orgainc aside. Which I know is good but otherwise any thing else. And if I do go back to Harrison's is it ok to use zupreem and Harrison's together for a while?

I don't see a problem providing both Zupreem and Harrisons together as long as you make sure to supplement plenty with fresh foods as with anything, a whole pellet diet is just as bad as a whole seed diet, in their ways. In any event, it's sometimes best to repackage the food into containers or bags, store what you don't immediately need in the fridge or freezer, and make sure that what you are using is in sealed tight bags or containers.

Right now, I have about 10-15lbs Kaylor of Colorado Cockatiel No Sun seed in a cleaned out cat litter container. I have another 5lbs in a budgie seed container that is bought from Walmart. If need be, I can package this seed into the budgie seed container, or cleaned out large butter tubs, and store it in the freezer as needed.

i use harrisons and zupreem.
You should be able to use the harrisons over 4-6 weeks.
they have a phone number for questions....Customer Service: 1-800-346-0269 (toll free)
i keep most of it in the refrigerator, and keep a week supply in the bird room....
you can freeze it, or refrig it, in the bag it comes in.
If you are only getting 2 weeks,,you should call thier hotline......

1. Do I need to refrigerate Harrison's or repackage the food into plastic bags or tupperware?

ANSWER: Refrigeration of the food is not necessary but may extend freshness. Use up food in 4 - 6 weeks regardless of whether you refrigerate or not. Always store the food in it's original packaging. Harrison's bags are the very best in preventing oxygen from getting to the food and causing rancidity. Squeeze out the air and zip the top shut. If the zip-top gets damaged or will not close properly, just roll the top down a few times and "chip-clip" the bag closed. This is still better than plastic or tupperware...

2: Why should I be sure to use up my open bag of Harrison's in 4 - 6 weeks?

ANSWER: Since the food is organic, that means there are no preservates that will artificially extend the shelf life. The food needs to be fed fresh.

Try thinking of the bird food as you would your own food. An open box of cereal would be discarded long before six weeks. A loaf of bread only stays fresh for a few days at best. If you find that you have food left over after 4-6 weeks, you may want to consider purchasing the food in smaller bags and keeping them unopened.

Offer fresh food daily and discard uneaten food from the feeding dish.

I store all my pellets and seed in butter containers in the freezer. I use the small butter containers becuase I can take out one at a time and use that up in a resonable amount of time. I would for sure call Harrioson's. the customer service is really good.
