Bird Loosing Feathers

I am new to this so please bare with me.
I am a very sickly man with life threating diseases. So I went last October and bought my wife a Cockatiel so she wouldn't be alone when something happens to me.
Her and I love all animals but a bird was gonna be new to both of us. Let me tell you, that was not only the best thing I ever bought for her but for me also. Mr. Huffy has us both trian good! He brightens both our days. He gives kisses, says, "I love you," "hello," and "Hey pretty Mama,"
I don't know his age. I bought him at a flea market off an elderly couple who takes in birds that people can't have anymore.
My question is .. does Cockatiels shred feathers as cats and dogs shred their fur in the summer time? Why I ask this is because of this past week, Mr. Huffy had all kinds of little feathers in his cage one morning when we got up. Now since I cleaned his cage and have the AC on there is no tiny feathers.
I greatly appreciate any answers on this question.
Thank You,
Terry TerryBear55@webtv.net

Hi Terry:

That's a wonderful gift to give your wife. All birds molt (that's the correct term for shedding feathers) at least 2 times a year. Usually, they will molt in the spring and again in the fall. Additionally, birds will lose small amounts of feathers throughout the year just from wear and tear. There shouldn't be any bald spots, however. If you notice bald patches, then you need to find out why.

I hope your illnesses won't interfer with whatever time you have left. I'm a cancer survivor and my husband has already had 4 by passes. Life is precious and never long enough. My birds bring me great pleasure.

THE OUTLAW

Yep, the sort of shed it's called molting. They usually drop feathers a couple of times a year and get new ones in. You will notice feathers coming in that look like they are in a tiny plastic type straw (sheath). When that turns white it will flake off in your fingers.
