Canarie Question..

I know Finches pretty much raise their babies by themselves. Do Canaries do this also or do they require human intervention? (with a normal clutch)

Yes, in a normal clutch they do usually (always can be an exception though) raise their own babies quite well if provided the basic necessities: clean water, fresh egg food, fresh seed, fresh greens, relatively stress free area and proper lighting, clean living conditions, proper nest and lining etc......Of course as responsible breeders/keepers we should be ready to intervene and handfeed if necessary and we should have all the necessary equipment and knowledge/notes at our fingertips to do so.

Same goes for the finches, we should be all prepared to intervene whenever necessary. :)

Thanks Joel. I really just love seeing the interaction between the male and female birds. My male finch really looks after the female. He preens her, lets her bathe first its just all really sweet! They laid one clutch of eggs (theirfirst) with no results and they have been mating so i suspect more eggs are coming! I'm curious to see how they will do as parents as they seem to have a strong bond together. I live 2 minutes away from a bird store owned by a repuatable breeder of lovebirds, canaries and finches so i'm sure she can tell me what i need. I was told though that they will look after the babies by themselves with no human intervention (as like in the wild). I think Canaries are pretty little birds and i'd love to own a pair but i will have to wait a bit as we are in smaller living space. When we do move though i plan on getting apair and EVENTUALLY getting a Caique :) Just one though not a pair or wait..who knows!! By then i really don't know what i'll be doing as birds as quickly becoming a love of mine. Anyhow thanks for the advice :)
