Well I did not look up in a dictionary to get the official "exact" definition of a proven pair but there are many same sex couples that cannot do without another and like Monica said, exhibit mating behavior toward one another to me, I consider that a proven pair. Just a personal opinion.

Technically a proven pair must be one male and one female that have layed fertile eggs and the eggs have hatched.

Since proven pair is more of a breeding term, I'm not sure that you can have different definitions of it...I mean, you could be looking at a law suit for using it incorrectly. ^^;

But, that aside...I've read a lot about homosexual behavior in animals...the problem I always find is that the same sex couples are not actually engaging in intercourse, which means it's more of a platonic partnership...either that or they end up having relations with females at some point.

I don't think it's unusual for animals (including humans) who are isolated to pair bond, no matter what their sexes are, especially in a situation that is not natural to their environment.

The truth is...humans are just unique creatures. There are societies that lived long before ours that didn't actually have a concept of "homosexuality", but had men and women that exhibitted behavior we would term as such. Uh, I'm probably straying and getting too Kinsey-fied here. I'll stop. ^^

Either way...there's really nothing wrong with it. Sounds like you have two happy healthy males. I just hope they still love you just as much!

Although "proven pair" is a 'breeding term,' there are still breeders and brokers selling birds as "proven pairs," regardless of whether or not they've actually ever reproduced. I actually came across an article that talked about all the different terms used, although I can't recall where it's at now.

And same sex couples have been caught mating before, as a true pair.... hence why many may be sold as "proven pairs" even though they aren't successfully reproducing.

As far as I know you can't be held reliable for selling an incorrectly sexed (if sexed at all) bird. Otherwise though, I agree with you.

Good point...I guess you would have to legally prove that the seller knew the sexes of the birds and willfully lied about it....

My pionus and cockatiel (both males) are the same way!! Sort of.. it's more of a one sided love.

Artemis (cockatiel) absolutely HAS to be within view of Bernard (Pionus) at all times. Sometimes he'll get near him and start singing to him but Bernard on the other hand hates his face and will chase him off all the time.

I seriously doubt that it has anything to do with sexual preference. I had two male cockatiels that bonded, they'd preen eachother just like one would preen me if he were sitting on my shoulder. They'd play together-it was fun to watch. It's completely normal, they make friends, just like we do. :)
