Destructive Chewing - how to selectively control?

I have a lovely pair of green cheeked conures. They have plenty of chew toys such as wood, plastic, rope etc. but they still chew items that they shouldn't.

Yes I know this is normal, but, is there any safe way of repelling them from chewing selected items? For example is there a flavour or scent that will stop them that we could rub on items that we want to remain 'chew free' - such as pepper?

Perhaps you have some other method?

Thanks,

Scott

There is a bitter apple spray for birds (it should be in a local pet store) that I've had some success with.

What are they chewing? You should say no firmly tell them to step up and move them away from the item. Maybe someone can think of something else. Keep things neat and tidy and items tucked away where they belong. Chiquita (my IRN) LOVES pens so I have to keep them in the drawer and put away.

Chiquita has destroyed a camera, blinds, a picture frame and much more. I put towels or sheets on the things that she will chew on. For example I put a blanket over this very expensive painting I have. This was when I first got her so I was not used to chewing, now I know she chews anything and everything.

Boomer my GCC is not much of a chewer thank goodness. I already got a big chewer on my hands.

You could try vinegar, it's harmless but I'm not sure if they would find it unappealing.
I don't think pepper would work as birds aren't affected by 'hot' foods like chilli. You could also perhaps try lemon juice? That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I think you should try the above and see what happens, your sure to come across something they don't like the taste of!

I would try the bitter apple spray that has been mentioned. Also, if the birds are chewing something they shouldn't be I wouldn't allow them near the things they are chewing if you can help it. I know its tough, our birds can be prettttty sneaky!!!!
