is this normal?

I've had my indian ringneck for about 2 months now.. and all day he just hangs upside down at the top of his cage. he'll climb down the side of the cage upside down to get food and water(very cautiously for some reason?).. but then he goes straight back up. he's up there about 90 percent of the time.. he even sleeps like that usually. the only other place he is content is outside of the cage on top of it. he doesnt really play with his toys.. just every now and then he'll pace back and forth either upside down or on top of his cage. and sometimes he will be up there, and he'll just flap his wings really rapidly for about a minute or 2.. hes not falling or trying to balance.. hes just kind of.. doing it for no real reason. I dont get it.. I want him to be happy, I got him a huge cage and hes using about 2 percent of it.. what does this mean?

The wing flapping is just him exercising his wings - my painted conure does that all the time.

As far as not playing with toys or using his cage, that sounds like my parrotlet. Hes a very timid bird, prefers to just be napping or preening, MAYBE hanging out on the top of his cage but not normally. Sometimes there are birds who are very social, others, like ours, just prefer to be by themselves and hang out. Also, even though it has been two months, he may just still be getting used to the new world around him. Some birds take longer to adjust than others. I know what you mean about wanting your bird to be happy and Im sure he is, so please dont worry!! It sounds like you have given him a nice cage and toys and a great place to live so just continue watching him and letting him adjust. He will come around - he just has to get used to where he is and what is going on. keep us posted!

Wings flapping is TOTALLY normal, my conure and IRN do this. They go crazy doing this it’s funny. They hang on to something and flap, it’s like us stretching.

Now being upside down ALL the time is very odd. I would try to encourage him to come down, give him treats. Put some fruits and veggies in his cage, maybe a honey stick.

How is you cage set up? Is there a lot of perches? The need lots of different size and textured perches. Can you get a pic of your set up?

I would also get a stand if you don’t have one to encourage him to come off the top of his cage. Put some toys on it and maybe a treat bowl with treats in it.

I do think he is still very nervous and need some re-assurance. Talk to him softly, put your hands in the cage and keep them there with no abrupt movements, this will get him to trust you and you will not harm him, you can do this a few time a day and do this with treats.

He will adjust and hanging upside is not harmful but I would not encourage it but I would put a perch right at the TOP of the cage, maybe he will sit on that.
