Cross Breeding
Aloha nui loa -
I have a pair of parakeets [male and female - Millie and Tuffy] in one cage, who get along just fine with each other. I also have one lovebird in the next cage [male - Pedro] who I let out during the day. He is enraptured with Millie - playing and chasing her from the outside of the cage - her response is equal. Recently Pedor knawed his way through the cardboard nesting box and gained entrance to their cage. They didn't appear to be fighting but I got him out of there asap. My questions: Do LoveBirds and Parakeets get along and will they or can they cross breed? I would like to let them out of their cages together but not sure if this is wise. What she said! *points to above post*
Indeed, lovebirds can be quite aggressive. Very few lovebirds are tame with other birds than their own species. They have even been known to attack MUCH LARGER birds than themselves, and have been known to decapitate some toes! Budgies and lovebirds are far too distant to be able to actually cross breed, or hybridize. It would be like trying to breed a wolf with a fox, it cannot be done because they are far too distant to be able to do something such as this. As far as the birds themselves, budgies originate from Australia, where lovebirds originate from Africa.
