heavy bird bread

this stuff is awesome. All four love it too!! I used this recipe the first time after Sophie broke her beak. They have both been a hit!!

The following recipe makes a 'heavy' bread, not as light as you would
prepare for yourself, but the birds love it. Notice that it contains
very little
baking powder (some baking powders contain aluminum) no added sugars or
other
sweeteners, and no added salt.

IN a large bowl combine the following ingredients:

2 cups yellow corn meal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup currants or raisins
1 cup nuts (pine, almond, walnut, pecan)
1 cup shelled sunflower seeds
1 twenty-nine ounce can of solid pack pumpkin
1 thirty-two ounce bottle of papaya nectar (or pomegranite juice)
1/2 cup of sunflower or safflower oil
1 teas. ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon of baking powder

Add enough water of juice to make a pourable batter. Use two large
well
greased baking pans. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes or until
done. Cool
and slice. Can be frozen.

A second recipe that he likes calls for

2 cups of yellow corn meal
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 small can pumpkin or mashsed sweet potatoes
2 eggs with shells
Greens: turnip, collard, dandelion, mustard or kale

(I put the greens in the cuisinart to chop fine, then add the
pumpkin
and eggs) then mix with the dry ingredients)

To this mix add any of the following ingredients, keeping the mix
consistency of banana bread

Peanut butter
Applesauce
Frozen mixed veggies
Bananas
oatmeal
Wheat germ
Flax seed
Cranberries
Corn
Seeds
Cinnamon
Jalapenos
honey
etc.

Pour into 9 x 12pan and bake @ 375 for 30 minutes until done. Can
be
frozen.

Okay, so I baked Iris his first serving of birdie bread tonight. I sort of went my own route on this one; taking some ideas from here and there. Anyways, he LOVED it! As a matter of fact, it is his bed time but I can’t get his head out of his bowl so I just decided to come on here for a minute to share my news.

I added some organic stage one baby foods: Papaya, pears, squash, and apple. I added a little of the pumpkin from the can, some raisins, pine nuts, walnuts, almonds, shredded carrots, shredded yams, kale, and a tsp. of palm oil. I added all of those ingredients into a Jiffy mix and called it a day!

I didn't have a problem with it sticking either but because it was so thick, it took longer to cook and the middle fell apart a little.
