nuts out of your yard?

I just picked up ALOT of walnuts and hickory nuts today at a friends house. I was wondering if anyone else uses nuts out of their yards or do you prefer the store bought for your birds.

hey, if they aren't pesticide treated, SURE!
think of it as organically grown produce. I get most of my veggies off of my parents farm, right up off the ground.

But, also ask if fertilizers and pesticides were used on the lawn at all this past year, just to be certain.

That was the first question I asked when I got there! Nothing has been no chemicals sprayed on her property in the 10 years she's been there.

I got about 20# of shagbark hickory nuts. I looked up the price on those and they run about $28 per pound.

I got about 250# of Walnuts that I will now have to shell. Lol, I'm going to be busy the next few days as I'm going back for more on Wed!

I plan on filling my freezer with enough to last me until next year!

That sure is a lot of walnuts! Unfortunately, I don't really have a place to pick nuts from, so we have to settle for store bought. But Chief sure does like cracking walnuts and almonds. I buy big bags of mixed nuts in the shell every few weeks and keep them in the fridge. They last much longer that way. I know you can freeze shelled nuts, but can you freeze them un-shelled?

i have tons of pecans on my tree and they tend to eat a ton of them.

If you are shelling the nuts dont worry about it.

i also have a pear tree that has a couple hundred pears on it so they get those too LOL

I dont spray anything i have ladybugs and other good insects to kill the pests that could trash my trees.
