Thumbs up Kitchen Sink Success Story!!!

I just wanted to post about my success with Lissa's kitchen sink recipe.

I soaked my 15 bean soup mix last night. Today I went to Trader Joe's and bought fresh veggies for this mix. I was gonna do frozen, but I guess I was feeling inspired. All of the chopping took forever! I used butternut squash; carrots; snow peas; broccoli; a bag of mustard greens, turnip greens, collards, and spinach; yellow, orange, red, and green peppers; and habanero chiles. According to the package, habanero chiles are the hottest peppers out there--they are 40 to 60 times hotter than jalapenos. I knew if I used those, the mix would be a sure hit. They will eat anything that's spicy. They absolutely LOVE it!!!! Thanks a bunch Lissa!!!

I have attached pics of it. I should have chopped up the greens more, but I was tired of chopping! I think the rice is a little sticky, but they like it anyway.

BTW, don't breathe in the steam coming off habanero chiles!! I also managed to get a nice steam burn on one of my hands dumping the stuff into the collander. Oh well, the fids are happy!

Looks good, I want to try it for Gypsy too. Everyone keeps saying 15 bean soup...what is that? Just a mixture of all kinds of beans?? And is hot peppers ok to feed them when they are young too? It strikes me as funny, that they like hot peppers. Dose it not burn there mouth? I'm a bit of a whimp when it comes to real hot stuff.

It's just a bag of mixed dried beans. It's usually labeled "15 bean soup mix." It comes with a flavor packet in the bag. Just toss that out. The peppers should be just fine for your bird.

Oh, I just realized, Bo-Bo is eating the vegetables, but it looks like Peeps is only eating the beans! Little brat!

I'm glad it's a hit with your fids! It sure is nice when they eat it after all the time it takes to make!

I made another batch tonight since I didn't freeze any last time, and with my small little guys, I have about a month's worth of food. I do the "quick soak" on the 15 bean mix, I've never done the overnight soak, but the quick soak works very well, the beans are still firm and just right.

Birds don't have nearly as much saliva in their mouths as we do, so therefore it can't burn their tongues. That's how they easily eat it! Just don't ever kiss a bird after they've eaten something like that!!!

Looks like a great BIG feast, glad to hear they are eating it!!

The worse is when I do something really nice (but not as nice as you with that great dish) and they dump the bowl or something after I chopped and such UGH!!

Looks good!

I've tried mash, chopped and hanging the whole green veg for the birds.

Its seems my flock take to chopped best...though I'm not sure how much actualyl get into their crop but it seems they at least pick them up?

When I hang them up, it becomes more like toys...only my zon who takes greens readily will actually eat it.

So yeah, like poi_lover, I have the most success with serving them chopped and all mixed up. :)
