Lettuce

Hi everyone,

I've seen quite a few recipes on here for lettuce-based foods, and I know a lot of peope feed it to their fids. So I just wanted to check for clarification because Australian National Cockatiel Society Inc. this Australian cockatiel society suggests that you should NEVER feed it to them.

Clearly nobody's fids have dropped dead overnight from eating it so I'm wondering if perhaps 'lettuce' in Oz means a different 'lettuce' to America? I only ever buy cos lettuce for myself, so I just wondered if anyone here fed their fids that. I've seen everyone referring to romaine lettuce, which I've never heard of!

In the states there are many types of green leafy plants refered to as lettuce but the most common where I live is a pale green ball called Iceberg Lettuce. While not toxic,Iceberg Lettuce is almost completely water and has little or no nutritional value.I have fed Green Leaf,Red Leaf and Romain to my Tiel.It should be washed first.

Well, if Cos Lettuce's scientific name is Lactuca sativa then it's the same type of lettuce as Romaine Lettuce.

Lettuce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Romaine, also called Cos, is a head-forming type with elongated leaves.

It's like the different between names of "cockatiel" and "weiro".

Aye I figured so, but I also wanted to check about that warning. If it's cos then I guess I'll try a little on them next time I have some! They adore their asparagus and broccoli now.

We have iceberg lettuce here too, 4HAND - unfortunately. My official term for it is 'scourge food'. The Subway people catch it if they try putting that in MY sammiches!

Lettuce just takes up space in the crop better used for something more wholesome, since it's glorified, crunchy water. It also makes their poop runnier than normal -again because of the water -which is why a lot of people advise against feeding it to birds. There's nothing toxic about it, though, and there's nothing wrong with your fids having a nibble occasionally. But they'll lose weight if they eat it every day, because of the lack of nutritional value.

Hope that was helpful. x3
