Ok Ok, we all have picky eaters. Me being one of them, I expect nothing less from my fids. Well, my Scarley is being a horrid thing lately with her food. She likes her birdie breads but disects it by removing the veggies. Unless it's corn she has nothing to do with it. I have so many bags of veggies in my freezer it's not funny. At least I wont go hungry. We have brocolli (she use to love) carrots, squash, sweet taters, greens, okra, peas, corn, yams, u name it....I have bought fresh stuff too. Well I have been worried that her diet is failing,,,i give her the stuff but she wants to play with it or throw it down for me to sweep up later.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I got cleaver. HEHEHHE I took 2 boxes of jiffy cornbread mix, mixed as directed, then in three smaller bowls i sperated it out,,,in one I added two jars of sweet potatoe to one, 2 jars of green beans to another, 2 jars of carrots to another. To thicken it up a little more, I added some baby cereal to it, along with some cooked wild rice. The verdict,,,,,BEAK SMACKING GOOD! The babyfood is high in all the right things and there is no sugar added. Just thought I'd share.......maybe you have a picky eater as well.

Bread seems to be the answer for picky eater. Paulie will try anything once but he definately has his favorites. One is bell pepper seeds....he goes nuts for them. I also make "birdy bread for him and use baby food in it along with pellets and egg food and just about any other good stuff I happen to have at them time. My daughter's Sun Conure loves the stuff too!

When making your birdie bread use jars of baby food vegetables. I like to use the mixed vegetable or garden medley along with squash or sweet potato (I also grate some veggies to add in but many do like to pick them out as well, LOL!). This makes a good source of vitamin A and other vitamins. I believe they are the "1st step or 2nd step" ones. They are pureed with added water and shouldn't have any added sugars or salts. When you mix them into the bread there is nothing for your birdie to pick out and any bite of bread he eats will be full of veggies.
We have had really good luck with the seven layer birdie salad and with the kitchen sink recipe listed on here before. After they get used to eating them it is a lot easier to get them to try more. Except to keep trying offering fresh veggies in all different shapes, sizes, mixtures etc there aren't a lot of ways to get them to eat the veggies if they don't want them. Some seem to like large pieces of veggies on a skewer. Others like them almost pureed. Some like them grated in salads and some like them just diced on a dish. It seems like the budgies and lovebirds are the hardest to get to eat something new or "fresh" but their are picky birds in any species. Lastly if you really can't get them to try the veggies any other way, take away their pellets/seeds etc for a couple hours a day only offering the veggies at that time and usually (not always) after a few days of this they will start checking out the other foods. |
