Eggs?

I read in my bird book that hard bolied eggs are really good for birds. Does anyone else feed their birds eggs? This seems really odd to me.

I was told they are good for them too but are high in fat so don't feed them alot of them. I feed my fids a hard boiled egg about once every 2 weeks or so. They just love them, shell & all. I just boil them, then get a sharp knife & cut them right in half. Usually the shell don't break. Crystal

I feed em too! You can even scramble them, or just fry em! Scrambled eggs was the first real fresh food (beyond plants from outside) that my newest tiel (used to be a seed junkie) ate! She now enjoys the Kitchen Sink Recipe as well as a few other foods!

In the wild, birds will eat their OWN eggs. Many old time breeders routinely recycle unfertilized eggs back to their breeders. All hookbills require some protein and some fats. Each species has its own special requirements. I feed eggs in one form or another to my flock about twice a week. Since over half of my flock are macaws, I feed some form of protein daily, in small amounts.

The one thing that I have observed over and over again with birds on pelleted diets vs birds on fresh diets is that the feathers and skin on the fresh dieted birds always seems less dry and less dull. In fact, all of my guys, even my one macaw that plucks, have very good skin.

Proof that birds require protein can be observed any time a car squishes any form of wildlife. Observe who first arrives at that banquet. Usually crows and indigenous birds.

Hi-Even my tiels like chopped hard boiled eggs also, but I caution everyone not to feed the shells unless you boil them separately. There is a danger of salmonella. Just cooking them at the same time or baking them with a mixture will not avert it. The shells need to be boiled separately. I don't use them at all in BIRDIEBREAD™ even though I use organic eggs; I add a calcium supplement instead.

Is that so? I thought bacteria died at 70 degrees Celsius. When I feed eggs I always cook them for 10 minutes or so, and that would probably kill all bacteria.

All of mine have gotten thier shells mixed with their eggs for years, but if someone is more comfortable with boiling, then that works too.
I also take it a step further. Egg shells are boiled in the microwave for 4 minutes, rinsed, and then dried in the microwave for an additional 4 minutes.
From there, they are put in the blender and turned into a powder that can be added to whatever is being made up for them. They not only love what they are getting, but they are getting the additional easily digested calcium that their bodies need.

Hi Guys! I feed my little guy eggs, be sure they are cool enough that they won't get burned...that can be bad. Here is a place that you can go to to get little recipes for your friends:

Hope you find it as informative as I did.
