Peanut Question

Sorry for asking a million questions recently! But Doyle likes to eat peanuts, or rather he likes to destroy peanuts. How can I help him realize that he can eat the peanuts not just shread the shell? He cracks the shell and throw the actualy nut part down. He is only about 4 months old, do you think he is just not good about holding the shell or does he just not like to eat it?

BTW- I am laughing so hard right now because I have this little tiny bird on me who will not stay on his perch and I am covered in peanut shell, lol. But I think my dogs started to like him a little better when they realized he drops food alot for them to pick up.

Some birds actually toss food to the dogs to eat!!! Picky birds, say "uh... whats this??? Here Fido! Have this!"

You might try unshelling the peanuts, then cutting them in half or smaller, then feeding them to Doyle! He may or may not understand then what it's for! Just try to not give too many each day/week!

Mine all love peanuts. Don't give him too many though...very high fat content. Let him destroy the shell...that's part of what they do. Hope they are unsalted.

Bonita did that when I first got her, she was about the same age. THen she learned real fast that those tasted good. She still drops things but tries not to drop the good stuff. But as said before they are high in fat so don't give to many. I always get covered in stuff to. Bonita loves to cover me in her crackers, cereal, puts rasins in my hair. SHe's such little evil thing. lol Crystal

Also please be aware of the possible danger of mold spores with peanuts. If you search this forum for peanuts you'll find lots of info. Many folks feed 'em with no problem.

My vet told me about that, and he said it has been known to cause some liver problems. So now I give Baby shelled peanuts.

I would suggest having your bird watch you shell and eat a few. You would be amazed at what they learn just by watching. Thats how I got Zoe to realize there was something more to it then just destroying the shell.
