(approx.) 1 1/2 cup pellets
(approx.) 1/2 cup seed
add anything else your fid enjoys, or something you're trying to get him to sample...

Since we bird folks don't use nonstick pans (), I spray a 9x13 glass cake pan with Pam (or something similar). Add enough water / juice to dry ingredients to enable you to pour batter into pan. Bake at 350 for (approx) 35-40 minutes (use toothpick test). I freeze in large portions and then break off pieces to microwave.
I made this for the fids last night and they love it! Although I used 2 cups veggies and 1 cup pellets. Smells good too!

With regard to cooking sprays like PAM, etc., there is nothing wrong with these sprays. They are merely vegetable oil in an aerosolized base and the aerosol propellent is a simple carbon dioxide mix. Since these products are intended for human consumption, they are generally safe for bird use. Birds have no place in the kitchen and should be excluded at all time, IMHO.This will prevent any possible problems with the propellent. Of course, non-stick cookward does present a lot of problems but that much is clear.

Also, when using eggshells you need to boil them separately before you crush and add them. They are a hazard for salmonella so NEVER just crush and add them to any kind of mix. I don't use them at all but I do add extra Calcium to BIRDIEBREAD.

I just read a warning the other day to not use them at all, because of them being so hard to clean. Wish I could remember where I read it. It was something new that had just come to light that prompted the caution.

In regards to boiling the eggshells, thoroughly cooking the birdy bread mixture should kill off any salmonella bacteria just as surely as boiling the shells... Just make sure that the center of the bread isn't "sticky" / moist by using the "toothpick test". The only possible problem with salmonella would be from undercooked bread (and therefore undercooked egg products).

1/3 cup of grated carrot
1/3 cup of cooked white or brown rice

I made a batch of this last night with a few modifications and it went over very well. I used orange juice in place of apple, and added more pellets in place of the rice. The birds were happy. :) Thanks!

Try using a jar or two of organic baby food in your bread. Sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas or applesauce. I generally use one veggie and one fruit.

Karen, I also read this and prefer to act on the side of caution-especially since I am catering to other people's FIDS as well as my own.

ok, for whatever reason I find myself unable to make a recipe as it is written. I'm no chef. Not even close. lol But I just won't leave well enough alone. First off I doubled your amounts. I used Gumbo Blend for the mixed veggies. I added a garnet yam (sweet potato) to the mix as well. As soon as it cools a bit we'll see if the fids like it!!
