Talking Birdie bread for amateur bakers

I found this on another website. It is really simple to make (which is good for me since I'm not cooking often and therefore out of practice - life as a student without roommates will do that for you), and Valo just loves it! So, I figured I'd share for those who also like it simple:

1 cup of plain yellow corn meal
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 egg
1/2 cup of apple sauce (I use unsweeted, organic)
1/2 cup of apple juice
1/2 cup of peas, broccoli etc
1/3 cup of grated carrot
1/3 cup of cooked white or brown rice
1/3 cup of pellets or seeds

preheat oven to 350deg. mix above incredients well, and spread in a 8x8 glass pan. bake for 35min. DONE

i cut it into 1-2cm squares and the freeze it. the squares can be thawed seperately by heating in the microwave for 30sec.

valo loves it best fresh and warm... but that unfortunately only happens once a month. he still goes crazy over it when it comes out of the freezer though.

Thanks! I'll have to make it at my grandma's cause my oven burns everything. It gets way to hot. Crystal

Here's my "simple & quick" birdie bread for cooking challenged folks like myself:

"Base":
2 boxes Jiffy cornbread mix
4 eggs (include crushed shells)
"Extras":
(approx.) 1 1/2 cup bird's favorite veggies
(approx.) 1 1/2 cup pellets
(approx.) 1/2 cup seed
add anything else your fid enjoys, or something you're trying to get him to sample...

Since we bird folks don't use nonstick pans (), I spray a 9x13 glass cake pan with Pam (or something similar). Add enough water / juice to dry ingredients to enable you to pour batter into pan. Bake at 350 for (approx) 35-40 minutes (use toothpick test). I freeze in large portions and then break off pieces to microwave.

I thought all non stick cooking items were totally off limits for birds. Even cooking sprays? I guess I read wrong?

i don't spray the pan at all... it doesn't stick all that bad to it if you just spread the stuff out and bake it. and on top - i'm fairly used to scraping by now since all my non-stick stuff went bye-bye...

I agree that all non-stick (coated with Teflon or something similar) cookware should NOT be used around birds! However, I was referring to using canned canola oil spray (which is nothing more than canola oil with compressed gas as a propellant) on a non-Teflon glass baking dish. I could just oil and flour the pan, but the spray gives the same result. My fid is NOT allowed in the kitchen when I'm cooking ANYTHING (for obvious safety reasons), but I have never read anywhere that you cannot use cooking sprays as long as your fid isn't in the room while you are actually spraying the product. If this is in error, I'm sure that the more knowledgeable members on the forum will correct me... Anyone else out there use cooking sprays?
