My Macaw is very meticulous in seperating her walnut shells, more often than not, neatly halving them. I take the empty shells, wash them, put whatever mixture I am making that day in each half, then take some white cotton thread and put the halves together again, then bake.
After they come out of the oven and cool, I remove the threads, and freeze after sealing.
When thawing, just pop them in the micrwave for 30 seconds to a minute, depending on your model.
I hide them in various parts of the cages for them to find. It encourages foraging, and for those with little beaks....they can be proud of their ability to open those big shells!
