Dressage riders?

Is there anyone else out there who rides dressage? I have fallen in love with it! Who knew it would be so challenging? I swear, it's the hardest thing I have ever done! It is like trying to make your horse to ballet, with you trying not to move!

I did dressage for about 2 years (hunter/jumpers before that). But I quit when I had my 1st baby. It is challenging - but lots of fun. I think a lot of people find it boring. But really when you think about it - a lot of basic dressage is part of any riding.

I only did dressage to train my jumpers. The balance learned in dressage is good for jumping, never went further than a bit of lateral work although it was fun to teach one times if that is what you mean by dancing, but never piaffe.

I've always fancied it but the big horses i ride are often in the "lumpy hack cob" category & I've never got around to it!

I'll try it some day, it does look a good exercise if nothing else! and a bonding between horse & rider too.

Hi Guys,

Couldn't resist this part of the board as I used to be a riding instructor in the UK! Basic dressage is a must for all riders in my view. Doesn't matter what discipline you are into, an obedient and well trained (not fancy!) horse is a total asset. Lateral work is the basis of dressage and leg-changes are a must if you're going to be eventing or show-jumping. I was devastated when I arrived in NZ to find that even instructors here felt that dressage was very much the Cinderella part of riding. I think things are changing now and good sense is prevailing.

Looking effortless is all part of the magic raddaughter! Looking effortless on the side facing the judge is the trick though! Good luck in your efforts, I know it will be worth all your trouble!

All the best,

Heather
