It was scary. The mare was 19 and the owner was inexpirienced. Im glad i told her to call me when it happened. He was suffocating when I got there and not moving - we got him out of the sack and rubbed and rubbed and then hubby and I had to lift him up by the back legs and wack on his sides. He was just gurgling. He finally came to life and eventually got up but it took him 5 hours to nurse but everything is good now. On my way in to work my frind send me a vid of a new baby she found in her paddock a month earlier than expected but not preemie. Black colt and Palimino filly all in one night many miles apart - glad she didnt have trouble cause she would have called me too....geesh...I saw God today:)

Okay, it is so not fair to talk about cute baby horses and not show any pics! ;)

I'm curious about this "waxing" thing. What on earth does that mean?? Do the mares get a brazilian to prepare for the birth??

Waxing is when colostrum forms and coagulates on the tips of a mares' teats about 12-24 hours before foaling out. They end up looking like whitish wax caps over the teats. Happens in some mares, not all. They also get more 'spongey' around the vulva but that can happen up to a week ahead. I've had many a long foaling night in my time, when I raised horses. lol

19 is not too old, if the mare is kept in good shape. We had a mare that would drop beautiful colts at 25!

Yes but these guys are pets and dont get enough exercise. They also kept her inside for many days before foaling in a stall. I kept telling hubby as we would drive by that they needed to get that mare outside. I have photos of the one baby but not the baby I saved. HOW do I get a video from my phone to here?? Anyone??
