My horse had it happen, but didn't totaly choke, but in this case it was to do with the psyllium husks i added to the feed, I fed it dry, so ever after that i always fed it wetted down.

Scary stuff :( Ive heard of it happening before, somone said they put a hose down a horses mouth to flush the food down...don't know if thats a good idea or not.
