Unhappy Need positive thoughts for my horse

My 9 yr old Holsteiner gelding injured himself in August. I called out my vet and we did flexions, nerve blockings, and xrays.

It turns out my baby has broken his coffin bone in his left hind hoof. It's pretty bad and may be career-ending for him. I don't care if he ever jumps again - I'll give it up for him - but I desperately hope that he can be ridden again after rehab. We've done one stem cell treatment already; took fat from his rump (he's got LOTS) and sent it away to be processed for concentrations of stem cells. Then we injected it into the coffin joint to provide new bridging bone cells, hopefully fusing the broken part of the bone back to the main part of the coffin bone.

I'll attach the xray. The xray on the right shows the healthy right hind hoof, the xray on the left shows the large, marble-sized round chunk of bone that has broken completely off near the top of the coffin bone. I'm not expecting miracles, just want to be able to ride my pony again some day in the future.

Its a good clean looking break and with the advances in medicine I think your outlook is good. Start looking for a good Natural Trim Farrier for when he is healthy again! It will greatly increase his chances of being ridden and invest in a good fittin pair of boots instead of shoes for his long recovery therapy.

Thanks Emmilyy, he's pretty special to me.

Lori, while it is a clean break, it's in a bad location. The vet says that arthritis will eventually become the biggest problem and the most likely cause of him having to be retired from riding. If we can get that bone fused tightly, we can hopefully end up with arthitis that can be maintained with joint injections and Legend/Adequan.

I'm definitely going to look into the natural hoof trimming! I've always believed that shoes cause more problems than they prevent. Right now he has to have special shoeing because the break is inside the hoof and the hoof wall can't be allowed to flex/absorb the shock of bearing weight. If the hoof wall is as stationary as possible, it gives the bone a better chance of fusing. I'll look into hoof boots too - wonder if they come in XXXXXL? He's a bit of a platter-footed beastie!

They do - They make them for drafts!!
These are the ones I use now

But you might consider the RX for the one foot during recovery time

I hope he gets well enough to be ridden again. I love his star and the snip on his nose- what unique markings he has.

He has white lips too - looks like he dipped his muzzle in white paint! Here's a pic of him doing "tender moments" (if he presses his cheek to mine, he gets a horse cookie! )
