Hey James! I've been wanting to make one of these for awhile now, instead of spending a ton on buying one from a store. This type of toy will be PERFECT for Mojo because she is now at the point where she just wants to climb climb CLIMB on everything in the house. I just want to give a big THANK YOU for taking the time to post this and sharing your ideas with all of us...its GREATLY appreciated and I look forward to putting one together as soon as this whole "CHristmas" things blows over

By the way Merry Christmas to you and everyone else on here!

Joe

Fantastically creative! Your post is so informative and your birds are gorgeous! I just admired the one Mr. Stinkefuss' mother made for him and she included the link to your thread in her response.

I just found this post and went right out to my local dollar store.... they had 24", 26" and 28" hula hoops.... I got the 24" to make one for my gray and 28" for my friends Greenwing. Than it was off to Lowe's, but was disappointed to find the cost of the poly cord as they only sold it in 100' bundles. What I did find was the same cord in 100' for about 1/2 the price at my local Tractor Supply store. They also had just about everything else I needed to make the H/ball. Now I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to use the hose as the screws would hold better and not strip? While at Walmart went to the kids department and got a bunch of blocks (pack of 96) for $6.... will drill holes down the center and use these in the center chain along with some beads that I kept from some of my gray's old toys. Thanks for the great directions and I'll send pics when done. Mine won't be as colorful as some as Tractor Supply only had 2 different kinds white with green flecks and white with yellow.... but I don't think he will care.

Modification

Greetings,

I've made a slight modification, when using the 1" cross pieces from Home Depot, a fully wrapped hula hoop can slide into them. So, for added strength I've used eye bolts in the one pair of cross pieces and only made one cut in the hula hoops that go in the other direction. This means that each of those cross pieces has a solid hoop through part of it and the two ends of the other hoop. This should improve the structural integrity of that "ball".

I've also used a chain across from the top to the bottom cross piece to hold it in shape more when the larger macaws are climbing on it.

Z.
Hey Irish
I would like to see a picture of your modification so I can understand better. I am new to all this DIY stuff and am really enthused to get ideas from those that have done it already.
thanks for your help

I am so ready to try this for Lola. I've read through the mods and looked at the pics, but I am a bit upset that the pics from the main post are all gone, or am I the only one that cant see them?
