Thanks, Monica!
I went out into my yard and found that I have Dogwood, Birch and Sweet Gum. I also found a Tulip tree and am wondering if that is okay or not. But I have a large variety of branches to choose from to make my baby all different sizes of perches for his cage and his play stations! Thanks, again, for the info on the safe trees! |

There are a lot of identification guides in figuring out what type of trees you may have.

Here is an idea on bird perches. If you take a dogwood branch and strip the bark, you can shape it the way you want and hold its shape with wire. After that, bake in oven (I know that sounds silly) for a couple of hours at 325. Baking it will harden the wood and make it nearly indestructible. Let it cool down and continue making your perch. You may have to use a drill for your screws to attach to cage, for the wood will be very hard.
I found this out, because as a kid we used to make slingshots out of dogwood. LOL It works.....

Yep, find a safe tree first. Then boil and scrub the wood. Then bake at around 300 for a few hours or more depending on the width of the wood. When you are done you have a great smelling house (apple and pecan smell great!) and some nice, hard, safe wood for your perches. I use hanger bolts, flat washers, and wing nuts for the ends. Drill a hole a bit smaller than the hanger bolt, use an acorn nut to help screw in the hanger bolt, remove the acorn nut, put on a washer or two if you want, then the wing nuts. Works great!
