Hackberry Trees
Hi everyone,
I would like to make my own perches/stands for my birds. I have a hackberry tree in my backyard and would like to know if it would be safe to use? If the wood is safe to use is there something I need to do to the wood to rid it of bugs, etc.?? Thanks |

this is probably a long shot for you but its what I plan to do. We have a sawmill and lumber business and have dry kiln that we use to dry our lumber. This also kills any bugs that might be in the wood. We're due to get our first bird here next week and I will be going down to our woods to search out a good large branch or small tree. I don't know where you live but you might see if you can contact a sawyer near you. Around here, there are a fair amount of portable sawmills. If the sawyer himself doesn't have a kiln, he may be able to point you to someone who does. Chances are you could tuck a branch or small tree in any one of his loads for a nominal fee. Just a thought.

please make sure to check out the type of wood you are going to use for the preches to ensure that they are bird safe woods. there is a websit in another thread on here that gives a listing of good and bad woods for birdie perches.
