lovebird aviary

i recently build an aviary for my birds, 8 ft x 8 ft octogon, using wire with 1/2 inch squares. friends have questioned this saying snakes might be able to get in. since i have seen small snakes before, should i have to worry about this......would the birds be able to put up any defence from small snakes?

Well sorry to answer your question with a question but why would you want to risk your little birds lives to snakes?? I would either snake proof the area or something but if there are snakes that really can't be good!

A half inch thick snake could easily eat a lovebird(it couldn't get out afterwards of course). You could build a secondary frame around the aviary and cover it with a fine screening material(good for mosquitos too). Just make sure the lovebirds couldn't get to the screening and tear it. This would also require bi-daily monitoring for rodent damage. Another, and easier choice(possibly), would be to panel the lower half to the aviary with wood sheeting. Definitely do something. I would probably do a combonation of both(snakes and mosquitos could be very dangerous to you birds).

i would put some aviary wire on the bottom, with brick all around the outside of the aviary

Hi... I am making an avairy for pacific parrotlets ( lil smaller than LB's) I also want my aviary to be 8'x8'x8' I was wondering if you could PM me your plans and what materials you used and roughly how much it cost. That would be wonderful :)

Thanks,

Micah

I have heard that if you make a line in the ground (straight lines) around whatever you don't want snakes near that they won't cross that straight line. Other wise use snake away or some other deterent to keep them away from your avairy.
