Really no glues are safe. I try to stick with knots etc. What are you trying to make? Glue gun is your best bet if you HAD to use. Just make sure the bird can't get to it!

PVC perches are easy and fun. I use no glue with mine and then vetrap outside for footing. Oh lets see, use cotton rope and, coconut shells, tiny pieces of toys look at this:
40 wood 3-1/2" large blocks parrot bird toy parts NEW! - eBay (item 300252299876 end time Aug-28-08 1416 PDT)

You could easily make your own and dye them also for cheep. Go or call your local lumber yard and ask if they have any untreated scraps they want to get rid of. Usually you get them free!

This is cheap!
Parrot Bird Toy Parts-20 Large Wood Spools GREAT DEAL! - eBay (item 250286918986 end time Sep-01-08 07:09:46 PDT)

If you go the link below you can see some that other's made and you get idea's from they. They are all tied, etc!

toys, Cages, Perches items on eBay.com

Bells, leather rope. 100% of all my toys I don't use glue. I use knots.

Also if your little one's are big enough (mine are 8 & 5) they LOVE to help make toys for the birds. Then it is a bet to see who's toy the bird plays with first and likes!

I made a pvc playgym and to hold the joints we did use the "gorilla glue" Vet told us it would be fine as it is inside the joints and the fids cant get to it. We did also use vet wrap for gripping

I know this is old, but it's still around and maybe other people will be looking through it like I did-

First, if you're making stuff out of PVC, plain old PVC glue is safe. It goes inside the joint anyway, and you don't need to worry about it being water tight, so you can apply just a little bit so it doesn't leak out where it can be eaten. But, 30 seconds after it's cured, it's safe to drink water that has come in contact with it, and safe enough to use in aquarium plumbing without killing fish. Birds are new for me, but fish, reptiles & amphibians aren't, and both fish & amphibians are EXTREMELY sensitive to toxic stuff in their water. Neither one is harmed by PVC glue. PVC glue also has the benefit that when it dries it is basically the same chemical structure as the PVC itself. It's just as hard as the PVC if not harder, and just as inert as the PVC. Word of warning- PVC glue makes NASTY fumes. You'll want to use this stuff AWAY from your bird. I use it outside, or right in front of an exhaust fan in a room closed off from our bird. You'll smell it for a little while after you apply it, also. While these fumes aren't toxic if ingested, you do NOT want to breathe them in, or let your bird near them. If you let it sit outside for an hour or so, you won't smell fumes anymore. To be safe, I always leave any PVC I've been gluing for animal use out on the porch at least overnight. It also helps if you run air or water through the pipes, to get rid of any fumes trapped in them. The smell goes away much faster. Blow through them (DON'T suck in!), or hold a vacuum hose over one end of the pipe to force air through. I use PVC for animal stuff ALL the time, and I just do it outside. I've never had any kind of problem using it.

Gorilla glue and your standard "super glue" are both safe, as well. Super glue is actually used to repair coral reefs, which are known for being EXTREMELY sensitive to chemicals. It can be put into an aquarium wet, and I've even heard of people using it underwater to repair coral and broken crustacean shells (glue a piece of eggshell to it). Be careful going with anything other than plain super glue here, as some of the additives (the kinds made for slower curing, brush application, bond to more materials, etc. . .) can be toxic.

Now, of course you don't want your bird to actually be eating any of these glues. And fumes while wet or immediately after curing are no good- you do want to let ANYTHING you put in with your animals off gas outside/away from them for a while. And even though they're non-toxic, still be careful about where you're applying them, because birds like to eat things, and even if the stuff won't poison them, it can still choke them.
