Attaching PVC?

Since I can't find a PVC stand that I like or is under about $250, I am going to attempt to make Savannah (Scarlet Macaw) a PVC stand. I have made a much smaller PVC gym for my Quaker, Zazu. It is just attached together, not glued or anything.

Since Savannah is larger, the PVC pipe will be larger...do I need to glue the pieces together and if so, with what? I plan to use vet wrap on some of the perches, maybe jute string on some and then roughing up others so not all her perches on the stand are the same. This is similar to what I would like to make for her and just want to be sure it is stable for her and I can move it easily.

Hi Denise
We made a hanging PVC stand for our birds and used the PVC cement thats in the pvc section. There are a few to choose from and they dry almost immediately and hold like crazy! On a side note, although we wrapped some of the perches in vet wrap and they looked nice and really helped with the grip, they didn't hold up at all. The very first night we put it on - Harlow peeled off big chunks of it and Jezabel has been chewing off the remainder ever since. I would have to rewrap it at least every 2 weeks to keep it covered....

Good to know! Zazu and my smaller birds don't mess with the vet wrap on their gym. I guess I will just rough up the PVC and wrap a few in the jute string then.

I think I may get the stuff I need tomorrow since she is coming home the week following Christmas.

Thanks for the info!

No problem. Our hanging gym came out great and we only spent about 60 bucks to make it. But we made another play area, that was even cheaper to make and the birds all love it. Have to let the birds take turns on it because they all love it so much. Its a bread tray hanging gym. Harlow LOVES to be on it, its the first place she goes to when she comes out of her cage. She does use the pvc stand to get to it :)

I use stainless steel screws to hold PVC together for bird projects.

Put the pieces together then pre-drill your hole.

I also use different sizes of sisal/manila/jute to cover the pvc.

I will make sure I tell my husb about using stainless steel screws when we make some hanging gyms. We made a huge one for our b & g and we didn't use glue or anything to hold it togeter. If it gets loose we use a rubber mallet to make it tighter again.

Because it is a big gym I like doing it this way since we can move it easily from room to room. If it were glued or anything, we'd have a problem.

(Got the instructions for our play gym from the book---->>>>>>>>>>

It is avail on Amazon, gives the exact measurements to cut the pieces etc.
