Smile Hello from conurema3!

Hi I'm pretty new here. :) My name is Jenn, and I have had birds for 10 yrs this coming Jan. My first bird was Caeli, a cobalt English Budgie. She's was quickly followed by another budgie, Nimbi a violet spangle, and then my baby Peaches, my male peach-fronted conure. Peaches will be 10 on 2-17-05!!! I've had her since she was 12 wks, and I've known her since she was 8 wks. I currently have Peaches, Rowdy, my male yellow-naped amazon (hatched 5-4-04), Solstice, my male pied wf tiel, (h: 4-22-03), 3 bourkes: Cosette a rosy (h: 1998), Hawkweed (h: spring 03), and Tamarac (h: 6-28-05), and seven american parakeets: Swanee fem. (h: spring 99), Dharma fem. (h: winter 99), Halo and Hemlock fem. and male (h: 2002), and Window and Cutie (sisters h: 7-03). Past birds have included an elegant parakeet, other budgies, a mitred conure and a brown-throated conure. I also have 2 rabbits: Risi, a lop (b: 5-99), and Gelu a wooley/angora mix (b:7-02), and a Chinese Crested Powderpuff, Orion (b: approx. 8/03). Many birds have been rescues, and many have not been planned!!! Birds are addictive! I worked in a bird store (www.feathersbirdstore.com) from high school until this year, 9 yrs!! I currently own my own petsitting business. I love my birds! Here are a few pics!

Talk to everyone soon!!

Oh, what a lovely group of birds! Curious though what happened to the mitred?

Anyway, welcome to BirdBoard! And it looks like you worked at a lovely bird store as well!

The mitred I had for a little over a year, he was a wonderful bird who had been extremely neglected his whole life. I received a call while I was still working at the bird store from this guy who asked if we "took birds" cause he had one he wanted to get rid of. He was sick of the bird, and he said that he'd rather get rid of him humanely if possible. Nice guy, huh? So normally we were fairly picky about the birds we took in for adoption, we really weren't set up to have birds sit in the store for a while waiting and waiting, but I told the owner that if he was not an adoptable enough bird for us to have at the store, that I would take him and find him a home myself. So I left and the guy dropped him off that aft. and I went to pick him up. His nails were horribly long, he only had feathers on his head, and a few wing feathers, not even a tail. In all my years of working with birds -- I have never seen a bird that plucked it's tail. He arrived in a filthy cage that wouldn't have been adequate for a parakeet, let alone a large conure! He had a cement perch that was too small for him, a metal mirror, and food and water! So needless to say, he came home with me! The next day I moved him into a 26x20 cage, got him varied perches and a few toys. It took about 9 months before he touched a toy! I let him keep his mirror (after a wash), because he loved it to pieces. He was not tame, and very shy (sqwak and run away when approached). The one great thing he had going for him was that he loved all different kinds of good foods! Veggies, fruit, pasta, rices, breads, etc. Never got him to touch pellets, but he did get a fairly good varied diet! We estimated him to be 15 yrs or more. He was not banded. Our happiest moment, was when I finally got him to play with me one night when I was cleaning the bird room. I had the music cranked and I was talking to him and dancing and he danced with me!! It was such a huge breakthrough! I never did adopt him out. He lived with me for 15 months before he passed. He was a wonderful character, and I really enjoyed our time together. At least his last year was good! I will post pics of him when I get on my laptop, he may have had very few feathers, but he was a beautiful bird! His name was Gus, and I called him Gustopher! Thanks for asking!

He sounds as if he was a lovely bird!!!! I'm glad to have learned about him and to know he atleast lived a good life in the end! That story though reminds me of my own little cherry head, and her life! I'm thankfull however that she is still with me for after nearly 4 years this December 22nd! She's around 15-16 years old now (as the vet estimates)... In her previous home, she lived with a tiel, lots of cats and dogs, and a couple. The bf moved out, took the tiel with him, and Noel was quite lonely. She was fed a sunflower based diet, in an old wrought iron cage with bar spacing too big, and she mutilated herself... Before that, she was attacked by a ferret which removed feathers on atleast her stomach and the back of her head, which probably resulted in brain damage. She's had a sad past, though she seems much more content and happy now, and her best pal is my female cockatiel!

Talking Hi Jenn!

I have a male YN whose 14. Baxter was a rescue/rehome. Boy does he cuss, his former owner must have had arguments with his significant others. He can repeat enough of the argument that we can get a vivid picture of it. We've had him a year now.
