Hi from Australia
Hi,
I am trying to decide between getting a baby quaker or green cheek conure. the more research i do, the more convinved that either of these birds would be great. i guess my main concerns at the moment at least are the territorial issues (quaker) and the nippiness of the gcc. i really would be so grateful for any advice you may have. i want to be as informed as possible given i will be looking at a long term commitment to this bird... When picking a new pet EITHER QUAKER OR GREEN CHEEK CONURE (hand reared/hand fed babies) which is best male or female? I have a choice of either and I dont know how to decide? Many Thanks in advance for your advice and personal experiences look forward to hearing from you janine |

While my sun and blue crown conures are indeed loud the GCC and others from Pyrrhura genus tend to be much quieter. Before you get a quaker make sure it is legal where you live. Many places have bans or restrictions on thier ownership and sale because escaped or released quakers have built massive nests on power lines.Quakers do have a better reputation for speach than GCC's if this matters to you. They also are known to pilfer household items and weave them into thier cage bars.Personally if I lived in an appartment I'd chose a GCC.They are usually quieter and come in so many beautiful color mutations. If you haven't seen a yellow sided GCC yet I would urge you to do so.

I hadn't heard about quakers being illegal in Australia... anywhere!
Personally, I prefer quakers, if given the choice... I prefer the slightly larger birds... GCC's may not be known for being loud but they do have a high pitched voice, where-as quakers have a lower pitched voice but may tend to be noiser. Both can make great companions, of either sex! My suggestion is to go hang out with birds of both species and maybe let one pick you out! Heck, you may even come home with a different species than you had imagined, if you let a bird pick you out!

I don't know much about quakers but I've a GCC and concerning his noise level, compared to my cockatiels, he is just slightly louder and shriller but will rarely call out to that high a pitch unless I've been at school all day (Wednesdays) and greets me as I come in the door. (He wants out and wants to play!) But it's not bad at all, most of the time it's just little chirps or mumbles as he crawls around his cage, even upside down.
He is a biter and the vet I spoke to said most GCC's will bite and it's cause their young, at the moment we're teaching him not to do so and it is going very well. |
