Hi from Iowa,

Hi, My name is Monica,
I have a cockatiel , his name is Casper. Ive had casper a month , I am new to the bird world , I have 3 kids, my oldest is off to college, my 9 year old has nothing to do with Casper, he acts like he is scared of him. Now Sarah my 5 year old just loves Casper, she drawes pictures for him and I hang them by his cage. My husband is in the military he is deployed overseas right now, so he hasnt seen Casper yet . I have a couple of questions, how warm should I keep the house for the bird? What can I do to get Ryan (9) so hes not scared of Casper? If anyone has any suggestions I would like to hear from you.
Thank You,
Monica

Hey Monica!

Temps are usually whatever you are comfortable with. If acclimated, birds can live in below freezing conditions.... most people on the forum tend to keep temps between 68* to 80*.... however my birds are mostly used to temps that are low 50's to high 80's.

If you are worried about him being cold you can get a ceramic heat lamp, heating pad, heating panel, some may even recommend heated perches.

As for Ryan, well I'm afraid I'm not sure what you could do, other than trying to show him that it can be fun interacting with Casper (but not pushing him to interact with Casper in any way). In time he may become more confident.

Thank you for answering my questions, Ive noticed Casper shivering and I like to keep the temp around 72 degrees. How would you use the heating pad? I hope that someday Ryan with want to interact with Casper. Thanks again.
Monica
