Im New: Jack the Brownhead
My name is Lisa, I live in Jackson Heights in Queens, New York.
We have a 5 year old Brownhead named Jack that we got from a bird shelter in the Pononos, Pa. His previous owner was unable to keep him when her child became ill and needed round the clock care, and she felt she couldnt give Jack the attention he needed. Jack is a wonderful cuddly parrot who loves head rubs and spends all day happily shredding his toys and cuttlebones. He sleeps hanging upside down on the side of his cage like a vampire bat but i read many brownheads do this. Like some Brownheads, Jack tends to have one special person, and for now, Im it. He is slowly allowing my domestic partner to get closer to him. He can now give him head rubs while Jack is in his cage and he can take him a foot or so from the cage. Its slow progress but progress none the less!
I grew up around birds. My sister was allergic to all furry critters so we always had birds and fish and reptiles instead. My first bird was a tricolor finch and then we had a parakeet named Blue who ate off of our plates at dinner time (my mom used to tell Blue to stop eating his "cousin" whenever he ate chicken) and he flew freely around the house. What a great bird he was. He lived a long and happy life. We then had a cockatiel who now lives with my sister and is pretty old. We called my dad the Birdman of Astoria lol. He once hand fed a baby cardinal for weeks when it fell out of its nest. He created his own concoction of food and the bird was gaining weight and doing well until it inhaled food and choked. I remember my big strong dad crying. He tried so hard to save that bird. I lost my dad a few years ago, his name was Jay. To memorialize him, i got a Bluejay tattoo. So birds are special to me.
