Newbie, that just lost one of my feathered kids

Hi, my name is Amy! I thought it would be good to talk to other people that love birds as much as I do. On Wednesday, our family lost our cockatiel to illness. He put up a great fight but he just couldn't pull through. It has been a very trying week, and I was wondering how other bird lovers cope with the loss of their feathered babies. Please share your thoughts and experiences with me, I could use some words of encouragement. This is the second tiel in 6mths, I have had to bury. Thanks from Glendale, Arizona.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your tiel. Do you know what he died from? There are many hazards within a house that birds are sensitive to.... and many could help contribute to the death of a loved pet.

It would probably be easier to bird-safe your home (no strong cleaning agents like ammonia, teflon products, candles, insecticides, etc) if you can and completely clean everything down before deciding to bring in another bird.

His liver was enlarged and he had a mass in his right lung. We took him to the ER on Tuesday because he fell and hurt his right wing... The Vet thinks he was sick to begin with. We had him on oxygen, antibiotics you name it. He was getting better on Wednesday afternoon and took a turn that evening. He passed @ 7:30pm. He couldn't stand and just gave up. I don't use anything I shouldn't use as far as cleaning agents, cookware, etc. It is just very hard because, Spike was my sons bird and everyones favorite. My Goffins have a check up appt on Monday to make to sure they are in good health.

That does sound pretty rough... though it is good that you are getting Sammy and Chloe checked out to be sure that they are healthy.
