Well...Let's see here...just before I stopped posting I had gotten engaged, since, I got unengaged, almost bought a house, reconciled with my ex, moved back in with him, got re-engaged, rolled a Jeep Wrangler (and walked away!), started planning a wedding, doubled my responsibilities at work, rehomed my B&G macaw, and adopted a Harlequin.
I think that sums it up in a nutshell :) As for how my flock grew to be this size.... My first bird was an albino 'tiel, but she died at less than a year old. Then I got a quaker, but my b/f at the time kept it after we broke up. A year or so later I purchased my Peach front conure b/c I didn't like the condition of the shop he was in and I was wanting a bird again. After that, I was presented with an oppurtunity to adopt a wild-caught male Mealy Amazon from Parrot Jungle; he turned out to be a sweet, but grumpy old man who is now my "momma's boy". I then bought a blue IR at a bird show after I talked to the breeders and realized that they were in it for the money and were frustrated b/c this one IR was not "pet quality" and would not sell...I offered to take it off their hands for $100...they reluctantly agreed (they were charging $500). I bought a black capped conure at a bird show that was probably one of the sweetest birds I'd ever seen...I let him become fully flighted, and, one day my fiance walked outside to get the mail and before he could shut the door, he flew out and we never found him. My fiance felt horrible and he thought about how much I talked about the quaker I had before and researched them to learn as much as he could...and he surprised me by buying one from the same breeder I'd gotten the first one! My TAG came to me via two friendships I made on this board...my friend and I adopted a brother and sister TAG from a breeder that we were friends with on here. My B&G was part rescue part adoption...a lady that had had the B&G for 14 years decided that she couldn't keep it anymore after the hurricane we had here a few years back. She was anxious to get rid of it and contacted our local bird store who, in turn, called me. We went to see if the bird was one that we could get along with...before we left, the lady had put the bird in a carrier, they'd loaded the cage and perches and playpen, and she told us to take her then b/c she didn't want any money for any of it, she just wanted the bird to go to a good home. The B&G was sweet to my fiance, but didn't have any use for me...and her and my amazon had a riff between them that was stressing them both to the max, and we realized that she wasn't making any progress with us and wasn't doing well being in a home with other birds. We rehomed her with a close friend that has wanted a B&G his whole life and could devote a lot of time to her. We weren't going to get any more birds...but as fate would have it, on Halloween night, a little girl came to the door dressed as a pirate w/a Harlequin on her shoulder (a Catalina or a Harlequin was my dream bird!!!). I asked if I could hold her, and she nuzzled right up to me, rested her beak on my shoulder, closed her eyes and let me pet under her wings...I fell in love!! The little girl then told me that the bird was for sale and that her mom was at the end of the driveway so we walked down to talk to her. She said that she had tried to advertised several times trying to sell the bird but that she didn't have any takers. I told her we couldn't afford much at all (she had been asking $1200, then $900), but that I wish I could. My fiance called her the next day to see what price she would take...I went and picked her up for $500, with the cage. I had always wanted a Harlequin (or Catalina) but refused to by one from a breeder or a retailer b/c I didn't want to encourage cross-breeeding...but I'd always hoped for a chance to adopt or rescue one. I know it sounds hypocritical that I love the hybrids but I'm against cross-breeding....but maybe I'm just weird like that :) Sorry for the lengthy post...but thank you if you've read it all the way through!!!
