Smile New Here!

Hello fellow forum members.
I just wanted to introduce myself and my birds here. First off I'm Javier, I'm literally owned by my loving (and loved) yellow collar macaw ~Susie~ and my Australian cinnamon lovebird ~Melody~. Susie is 12 and she came to me about 6 or 8 months. She is my first rescued bird. Her owners husband passed away and she has more than 30 bird in their care. She realized it wasn’t fair for the birds and contacted a macaw rescue here in Florida. I ironically have been in search for a macaw for a yr and i decided since I'm young and still in school let me volunteer with birds. I chose that macaw rescue and i had to convince the lady to let me visit and she was impressed with the capabilities a mere 16 year old can do with her 18 macaws! Melody on the other hand I had since she was about 3 or 4 months ( she didn't have her full color ) and I've had her for 2 years this summer. We've had are ups and downs ( mainly Susie with her problems )lol. So yeah, I wanted to finally introduce myself and my two girls.
~Javier

Those are some great shots! Most adults don't want to rehome birds (especially ones in rescue places) with teens because many don't have jobs, most are still in adolescence, they may not know how to properly care for the bird, etc! They also worry about how uncertain a teen can be, because there is college, work which may involve moving away from home, etc. Most teens just are not responsible enough to take on the job of owning a bird! Well, I know how much of that is as I'm 18 now and currently caring for 12 birds! It's great though to have you here and I hope you enjoy it too! Welcome!

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I know that my age may be a set back for many. However I have truly amazed many. I am in school, I'm almost in two band originations and still devote time for my birds. Right now they are my everything and will be. Me being single does help devote more time for them, however when I do pick back up on the dating the person I do date would have to understand my devotion to my birds, if not then they lose. My average day starts at 6:20 and the girls wake up then. School get let out at 2:30 i get home at 5:00 *after practice* and they are let out from 5 to 10 pm. With ample time with me and play time alone. I can only do my best with them because that is what they deserve !

My birds are my everything as well! It's not easy being in a relationship and the other partner just doesn't understand what it is to be loved by an animal, especially a bird! That can create some arguements....

Sounds like you are quite the busy person, though it seems like you'll fit in here quite well!

Welcome, Javier. I hope you like it here :-). My youngest son is a year older than you, and although some of the animal care duties fall to him (we all do our parts!), they are not his passion, and I doubt they ever will be. He thinks the dogs are a nuisance, and the birds are to be feared. I think you kind of have to be born with a love of the beasties, which you obviously were. You also obviously have some decent photography skills. You'll do just fine around here, methinx :-).

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!! Very cute babies you have there. Definitely keep the pictures coming. And kudos to you for taking in a rehome at your age. Not very many kids your age have the patience for a bird period...let alone enough patience for a rehome!

After having to deal with Noel (a biting, screaming, mutilating 'maniac'), my cherry head, when I was 13, I doubt that the majority of teen bird keepers would be able to handle a rehomed bird! Heck, not even an adult (previous owner) could handle her much, and hardly anyone else that I know is brave enough to handle her besides me!

Anyway, can't really wait for more posts!!! Wanna hear the stories!
