Funny, I was about to post a question about Greys -- specifically red factors. I was told she's a female Congo red factor. She has a diamond of 7 pure read head feathers in a cluster on the crown of her head. She has 3 pure red feathers on her back, pure red wing feathers under her wing and the grey feathers on her back have a bit of red coloring.
I have read in various sites that often the young will show signs of being red factors, only to lose the red when molting and grow traditional grey feathers. Is there any way of knowing, via tests or thru other means, in which I might know if she is a red factor? I didn't buy her because of it, and quite frankly, I didn't know enough about 'red factors' to really even seem impressed. She had the best personality and it was almost like she picked me. |

I think Cedar Waxwings are gorgeous little birds. Is it legal to keep them, though? We don't get them here, I think, but in the state I live in (besides the state of confusion!), if they WERE native here, we wouldn't be able to legally keep one without a permit. Not that it ever kept me from having newts, garter snakes, turtles, frogs, toads, a raven, bats, an opossum and a bobcat kitten when I was younger.... :-).

In terms of legality...what bird? C'mon, it's a budgie, you dolt. (as I let the waxwing free outside). oh yeah, did I mention, my neighbor lets his three cats run free during the day? I can't really utilize my bird feeder b/c it's becoming a feeder for his cats. I love cats, but how is it the law bites me in the but and not him...? I know you come in peace and I'm not angry with you. It's just one of those little things that ain't fair in life.
puff... your babies are adorable. I'd just love to give big kisses. Big beaks don't scare me. They scar me, yes, but I'm ok with it. I don't have a website, but I might be able to post a few pics of the baby. brb |

Bela, your birds are gorgeous! Red factor greys normally do molt out their red feathers, but a few may actually keep them... I've even heard of some normal greys that grew in red feathers! Don't really know much about it, but there are some lovely red factor greys out there...
As far as your budgies, Romeo looks like a gorgeous little sky blue dilute male! The other two both appear to be females however, as they both have white ceres... of course with Albinos, it's hard to say for sure as some males can have a tannish looking cere... Albino though, to put simple is the BLUE lutino. Lutinos are green birds without blue, where-as Albinos are blue birds without yellow and blue... just devoid of all colors... I have heard of some albinos having a blue sheen to them however.

Bela, no offense taken, even tho' I don't think I'm a "dolt" :-). I know what you mean and how you feel. I don't have a cat problem with the bird feeders, though--I have 11 dogs, which means no domestic feline in the universe is brave enough to come into our yard! "Back in the day", though, cats, including my own, used to be a real problem. Not much you can do but live-trap the cats and take them to the local shelter--or get a few dogs :-).
I looked up Cedar Waxwings, and I guess they are here--I've just never noticed them. We appear to be one of those places where their northern and southern ranges overlap. I'd probably keep one, too, if I could :-). What I'd really love is a magpie--but again, even though they're no more valued by people than crows, jays, rats, raccoons or 'possums, you still can't legally keep one without a permit. Sucks. Heck, I couldn't even keep a chipmunk, which I found out when I went looking to see if you can get them in pet stores (my sister had one when we were little, and I loved that thing!). Still 'n' all, if I found a baby magpie.... who knows?
