Newby from Alaska

Hi, I have a parakeet we adopted from the animal pound a year ago and I'm still trying to figure him out! He is a lot more complex than our dog, guinea pigs, and hermit crabs all put together! I am looking forward to learning more and will be posting questions about flying, biting and a second bird. Right now he is flying around the house, landing on me but preening me rather roughly sometimes. I love to see him flying so gracefully now that his flight is back but he seems a little bossy. I am eager to pick up some useful tips.

Welcome to BB!!!! The bossy-ness is probably due to being flighted and he thinks he rules the house! If you want to get him in a bit more control, give him a gradual clip so that he has to work harder to fly about!

Welcome! I'm always glad to have another budgie fan around - they are very complex little creatures! My budgie recently became flighted and for about a week or so he had an attitude too. He has calmed down since, and has actually become more affectionate than he was prior to becoming flighted, but I did worry about him becoming rebellious with his new flight feathers. I took him back to the basics and reveiwed his step ups on a regular basis and that seemed to help.

Welcome!
Hi, I am in Fairbanks. I was turned on to this site by Steve in the Fall. I really wanted to get one of your hand raised birds as a companion for ours. I chickened out however because I wasn't sure how to handle introducing the two and what to do if they were not compatble. As Steve suggested, I decided to research it a bit further. Life took over and it has taken me a while to get to it. Jill

Glad to see you here! It is always awesome to see people you know!

I would for sure clip the flight feathers for an instand attitude adjustment. I think there is an avian vet in Fairbanks? Hope you guys are warming up now!

There is lots of great information on this website. Lots of great folks here too. Hope you stay around!

Thank you for your responses to my complex, and bossy little budgie. He does seem to think he rules the house. He is better behaved with my husband but I am the one who feeds him and cleans his cage and initially hand tamed him. I hope he will settle down but it is good to know you can gradually clip the wings and he will still be able to fly. I have had it done only at the vet so far and it has been extreme. He was not bossy at all when clipped but he did not have the grace he has now and would fly into things and get stuck in places. I am really hoping he will be able to stay a flying bird. Thanks again!

Do you clip your birds, or only if needed because of attitude?
Thank you for the welcome, we are warming up, and the mud is starting to dry up too! Finally! Did you have babies in the Fall? That must be an awesome experience. Jill

Jerry was very ungraceful before he was flighted as well - broke off all his long tail feathers because he would have crash landings and land on his butt

How old is your budgie and how long has he been flighted? Just curious.
