Talking New here, wanted to say hello!

Hello everyone!
I am new to these boards. InFairVerona linked me to this place which I greatly appreciate! I don't have any feathered babies yet. But I am researching Bronze wing pionus parrots, I hope to get one sometime this year and will be surfing the boards for lotsa birdy stories and advice. Thanks for reading

Hi & Welcome
I'm looking for that perfect fit in a fid too. This is a really informative board with very passionate bird people. As my husband just said - you can't get this out of a book [the personal testaments I mean!]. He's happy I found this board as I was always getting him to look at the research I’d done - of course he does see any number of pics that are posted here because they are so wonderful .
It doesn't matter which type of bird you're interested in, there is probably at least one other who can help or give information.

thanks homebird! I have always been fascinated by birds and haven't found any bigger birds that would seem like a good match. My favorites are macaws but such a big bird with so many needs would probably be a big bad idea! Not to mention I only have little budgie and cockatiel experience so I thought starting small and working my way up would be the best idea. Thank you for the lovely post :)

Talking

Some of the members don't agree with staying with beginner birds if you have a real passion for a certain bird. You'll just end up with it in the end. So if you have questions they'll be sure to answer them. I've been directed by more than one person to go to Bird Clubs & Rescues to learn even more about the different birds up close. Then maybe offering bird sitting.

The bird that brought back my interest in birds was the Bourkes Parakeet. Such a regal little bird. They're pretty quiet & although perhaps not as good pet material as a Budgie, very nice to have if you want a variety, as they're peaceful too. I think: Smaller birds are a little like terrier type dogs - busy & often nippy - but individuals & training can smooth that out. The larger macaws are more laid back from what their owners are saying - but hormones are the big issue with big birds.

Every week it seems I fall for another type - hope I'm not fickle.
My favs are: Caiques, Brown Heads [Emeralds] & the Poicephalus family, Linnies, Budgies, & Java Finches. I like the Caiques [kigh-eek] & the Linnies because they're like clowns & acrobats & like to climb a lot. Oh & I can't forget the Green Cheeks & the Quaker. Other birds I have little to no experience with. Lovies were on my list but I'm not too sure about the aggression stuff.....

hehe, yeah I can see what you mean about litle dogs and little birds! When I had the 'tiel it took forever to socialize him and get him to stop biting the crap out of my hand, he was one of those petco birds you get for 20 bucks but they are completely terrified of people

Macaws are so beautiful, possibly in the future when I retire I may own one. I wouldn't mind owning a pionus and a macaw. But right now I am living in a single room with no where near the correct amount of space for a bird as large as a macaw. The cage wouldnt be much of a problem but keeping the bird entertained would be! I don't know if they are the birds for me I would have to do alot of research before even considering one. I used to think an eclectus was the bird for me but after much consideration and reading I decided not.

So far the pionus sounds like the best fitting fid for me. And bronze wings are incredibly beautiful when they reach full maturity. They would be good to have even if I had a macaw in the future.

I like your taste in birds

Hey, hey, hey! My little dogs and my little birds are not nippy. They express their displeasure.

I personally love little dogs for their energy - although my parents' Border Collie is a tyrant for getting you busy & keeping you that way. They must have terrier in them somewhere.

If you like Macaws, have you read the Viridian Rose, hatchling to fledged, thread? It's a Sticky now [instructional thread & companion ask questions thread] - I found it in the Bird Talk forum.

When I went to an All About Pets Show 2 springs ago, I had a great encounter with a mini Macaw & a Lesser Citron Crested Cockatoo. First one & then the other stole my heart. I almost ran home in my haste to learn everything I could about one or both. I still have yearnings for the Cockatoo . But I think they would be too much bird for me the rookie. + Age is an issue with me, as I'm in my early 50's. There are a number of members who have benefited from adopting an older bird - that is what I’d like ideally.

lol verona! My dog is far from little at 50 + pounds (trying to put weight on him!)

After much reading I've still got my heart set on the pionus. I agree about the cockatoo being to much bird! Same here, that is how I feel about the macaw :) maybe when I have a big house and plenty of time and space that is when I will add a bigger bird (maybe) or maybe just another pionus :D
