I am so glad to have found this site. I have already learned so much!! I fell in love with a Sun Conure and we just brought him home today. We named him Sammy and are happy to have him in the family. He's about 14 months old and hasn't had much human interaction. He seems to like being in his cage and fights when I take him out. He doesn't know how to step up and when I take him out will just sit on my hand, won't go on my shoulder. Any help and suggestions is welcome. Thanks everybody!!!
P.S. I have 5 beautiful daughters, ages 24, 21, 18, 16, & 14 1 Son in-law age 22 2 dogs---Chunkie (a mastive mix) & Sassy (sheltie) 2 cats---Patches (calico) & Bootsie (Patches' daughter, black with white feet) and now Sammy, our Sun Conure Last edited by Cheryl Denny; 05-13-2006 at 05:14 AM. |

Hello Cheryl, and welcome to the board. Welcome to Sammy as well.
Congratulations on the addition of your new fid. I'm sure you'll have years of enjoyment with him. Since you just brought Sammy home, give him some time to get used to how things run in his new environment. Once he starts to settle in, you will want to work on teaching him how to step up and down on command. It will make both of your lives easier. I would practice it somewhere away from his cage. Have him step up from the back of chair in the dining room or kitchen. I wouldn't be too concerned with wanting to have him on your shoulder at this time. The 2 of you REALLY need to get to know each other before you're making that step. For now, while he's in his cage, talk to him quietly. Read to him, or just go about your business next to his cage where he can see you. He'll come around, don't you worrry about that. Continue to look around the board, I'm sure there have been people with questions similiar to yours. You may find lots of answers!! Good luck, and post pictures!!! |

You can try feeding him human foods, or maybe going to the store and getting little treats... or you could even make some treats! There's a recipe in the recipe section for sweet potato balls! Be creative!

Welcome to the board, to you and Sammy!
I have two birds, Aree and Freddie. Aree is more of a 'treats' bird. She likes all sorts of fruits and vegetarables. She can't eat chocolate, caffiene, avacado or onions, because those can seriously hurt birds. She also lives Avi Cakes, Nutriberries and Millet which you can buy at petstores. Also, there are lots of things in the 'recipie' section of the board that most birds love! Try the 'Kitch Sink' recipie and some birdiebread and see if Sammy likes them! And no, it isn't a silly question!
