Quite interesting there! As far as grit, I too am against it... The oyster shell grit, if too much of it is eaten, it can cause crop impaction, and can also cut the inside of the crop up. Sand grit I guess could possibly cause crop impaction too... Both might be good in the aid of digesting seeds, though oyster grit is also good for calcium which can easily be found in eggs (and IMO, a much safer sourch of calcium than grit). Parrots don't really need grit though as they unshell their seeds to eat them, where-as pigeons eat them whole. But, that's just my opinion on it!

That's pretty much my opinion too. :) I'm glad there is someone who agrees with me. Often if I tell people that I don't like to use grit they start to preach about using it.
Yes, and the crop problems aren't the only thing... :/ Oh yes, I forgot to mention! I give calcivet sometimes but I also offer cuttle bone and calcium block. During the molt I use Feather Up and sometimes I give Bio Plus cure. Last edited by Sequinhaze; 05-28-2006 at 08:39 PM. |

I loved the pix of your tiels!! I have a baby tiel named Pico, he's a bit of a picky eater but I am working with him to improve that. I saw your website even if it was in finnish (is that spelled right, even those whose first language is english still have trouble with spelling!) it looked really nice. I loved the pix you had on it, and your tiels are just beautiful!

Writing a Bird book is a great idea - good luck.I too loved your photos. You will be able to include good pictures in your book. Your birds are very handsome. I like all the varieties too. Web Sites Here's an interesting American site: http://www.cockatiels.org/ A Bird Club, in my area, posts great info on Cockatiel care - in English of course!: http://www3.sympatico.ca/davehansen/tiel.html Ontario Breeders Collections worth looking at - I really like the look of their birds: http://www.geocities.com/hwaviary/HWA2.html & http://homesteadshatchery.homestead....ockatiels.html I am amazed that you got a Grey so young! But obviously your family knew you too. A bird for a child ends up being a family affair so your family must be very supportive. There are at least 2 other Finns here that I noticed this month. PS - I too write long replies, but it's hard to edit out all I want to say! |
