what a bird! the CAG
the smarter the bird, the more potential fun! that doesn't mean easier, or that you won't do more thinking to win the chess game that your bird is playing with you.
i have been involved with birds for over 20 years (parakeet, 2 cockatoos, and a new-2mo CAG). i have found thte interactions with my BongoPete to be the most rewarding and the most worrisome when they don't go right. as everyone has said, these birds are SMART. they are also active, with a powerful moter, and an agenda to match. i think that the trick is to get them to want what you want, and then slow play it a little. i tell my bird how smart he is, and i think he understands, and i tell him to wait a minute. i think that this builds anticipation for the birdy. my guy is almost 6 months old-about 2.5 mo in our family which includes a 7 y/o goffin.
i met my "bird mentor" about 13 years ago, and i have gotten these guys through him. i credit the qualities of the bird for much of the sucess, but this guy is mine now, or i'm his. he travels with me, eats what he likes of my food, is potty trained, will let me pet his head 1/2 the time on simple request, and is careful such that i do not worry about my nose and ears. i am very blessed here, and i know it.
he's playful, and i think that i started getting to him by play in the cage, and laying around in his room with him where he could just see me. when your bird starts pointing to you like a weather vane, you're getting there, and these CAGs seem to track in faster than most animals, even dogs.
