Hi from Dixie
Merry Christmas from Dixie!
I am a somewhat new bird lover. My wife bought "me" a Sun Conure for a wedding present and I was hooked! Soon after, we rescued a Goffins with the thought that that would be it. Boy were we ever wrong :D !
Our "pusher" owns one of the absolute best pet stores in this country and she recently "gave" us a Senegal who had been rescued from a crack addict. Poor thing - CrackerJack - is/was petrified of people and was, I think, going through withdrawals. The idiots who had him feed him candy, soda, junk food and a pure seed diet. We've been slowly weaning him onto veggies, fruits, Zupreen and a BUNCH of love.
Our GC, Markie, was actually another rescue bird and he fell in love with me as fast as I fell in love with him, He has a history of bad plucking and is currently recovering from a molt induced episode where he even bit holes in himself. Our avian vet (who is the head vet at the Birmingham Zoo) has been working with us and we ended up having to put poor Markie on Prozac. I was amazed at how much that helped him. He is starting to get his feathers back and is starting to be himself again. He is definately the house clown. Don't try to eat supper with him on your shoulder! It's a sure bet he will do his best to share the plate!
Hamlet, our SC is the quiet, reserved beauty of the house. He loves his cuddle toys, is starting to groom Markie and loves Mango. Habeneros are a close second for the little guy. He is the one that screams whenever someone comes to the door and according to my wife, she knows when I get home from work because of the sheer volume he uses to announce me!
We are waiting on our B&G...my first BIG bird....I can't wait either....we actually had one, however it died at 3 weeks from PPD. Seems the breeder that our "pusher" got him from had an outbreak....she found a different breeder that she is more comfortable with and all we are waiting on is the egg. Nice thing is that the breeder will do the feeding out and when Brook gets him, we get him the next day....
We are also praying hard that an opportunity we have coming up will actually come through. Our avian vet is trying to get us "picked" as a foster home for a Harlequin.....the owners use her for educational purposes with the local schools and NutNut needs to be living with people in a home for socilization...I really, really, really hope we are chosen for this great honor.
My bird dreams are to start a real Aviary, specializing in Macaws, Conures, Sengals and Toos....wonder why? :D
Well, that's about all from Dixie......I look forward to meeting folks and discussing our feathered friends.
Mike, Pat, Hamlet, Markie, CrackerJack, Happy and Simba
