Smile Hello from c-c-c-chilly Montreal!

Hi y'all! Let's see, where to begin? I've been the proud owner of a gorgeous white male finch for about five years now. When I first got him I actually thought 'he' was a 'she' (since she was white and didn't have any of the regular characteristics) so 'he' (as I've now come to learn) has been carrying around the highly masculine name of 'Lavern.' Yeah, he probably chirps little cuss word under his breath, but I love him just the same! About a year-and-a-half ago his sister (and cage-mate, 'Shirley'...yes, actually a female...) became very ill and eventually passed on. Lavern has been on his own (and suprisingly very happy!) ever since.

Today I rescued three, 1 year-old finches who have been together since birth (two brothers and a sister.) One of the black cheeked brothers unfortunately lost one of his 'feet' to the jaws of a parrot when he was little, but it doesn't seem to slow him down much. The sister (and only female of the group) seems to have some feather loss at the back of her neck and I'm looking into who the culprit is... (some finchy super-sleuth action is about to go down!! (**Pulls out magnifying glass**) The third brother is your typical, run-of-the-mill zebra finch with light brown-ish cheeks.

I guess that's my pet situation in a nutshell...I'm by no means an expert and I'm learning mostly by experience (and brilliant websites such as this!) and look forward to absorbing some knowledge throught other members moments of trial-and-error (not-to-mention those members who I'm sure have cracked open a book or two about our fabulous feathered friends!)

Looking forward to learning more!!

welcome to BB - hope you'll like it here.... definitely a lot of opportunities to learn, but also just to hang out and share funny bird stories (that would bore the "non-bird" folks to death )

Male finches will sometimes pull out the girls' feathers at the back of the neck -- usually don't hurt each other, just looks pitiful

Thumbs up

Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone!

Pitiful is barely the right word, catschair....She's completely bald on the back of her neck and down a bit on her back. I'm kinda worried that the two males are 'picking' on her and if I should seriously consider separating her from her brothers?

Ha ha ha! (holds up 'rock on' fingers) Yup, we definately have hockey down to an art, now if I could only get affordable tickets!

Go Habs Go!!!

so, greencinacheeks...eventhough she has no back-of-neck feathers, I shouldn't worry? I mean she's not bleeding or anything, nothing more that what equals up to a chilly neck. Brrrr-r-r-r-r. (gotta put some finch scarves on the market!) See now, THIS is why I joined here, 'cause you guys all know your shizz! (Not to mention your hockey!!)
